The house progresses…

Just another glorious late autumn morning.

Bert is ready for his one morning a week at crèche,

the city is shrouded in mist as we walk to the bakery

and DJ605 is getting ready to land.

Argh, after almost 38 years you would think I would learn to stop putting things off, it just makes things so much harder. I’ve been looking at the jungle in our front and backyard for almost three weeks now, and it was only when Bert came running out of the grass pursued by a tribe of naked savages (okay, must stop watching Indy films) that I got off my bum and mowed them. Wow, who knew we had a cubby house in the backyard. A good mate of mine once told me the thought of doing the lawns was always much worse than actually doing them and he’s right. It’s good exercise and the place looks so much better once they are done.

Thankfully I took advantage of the good weather as it has clouded over since then, and that sounds like rain on the carport roof. Now all I have to do is tackle the paper work that is threatening to bring down the shelving above my desk.

Prior to the lawns we went out to the block. The fencing contractor was there building a fence between us and our neighbours. It was good to get a real sense of the size of our block and how much space we will have. The slab has been poured and looks, well, very slabish. Without walls the place looks tiny, it’s hard to believe it will be the same size as the display home we looked at.

Unfortunately there won’t be any pictures of the slab as the card in my camera decided to corrupt itself on the trip out there. We use the camera almost daily with the kids so we decided to pop in to Dick Smith on the way home to pick up a new 1GB XD card. It cost $24, which is amazing when you consider the 512MB card it is replacing cost approx $150 just three years ago. If we could have waited a no-name 1GB from Ebay would have only been $14. That’s just incredible – twice the storage for one tenth of the price in just three years. God bless Moore’s Law.

We have a slab! I was out meeting a client in our new neighbourhood today so I drove by. There were trucks, and men standing around looking at the ground, a big whirly blade thingy and concrete. Lots of lovely concrete. Photo will have to wait until the weekend but it’s getting even more exciting now.

A quick trip out to check on the block, if the weather holds they should pour the slab tomorrow (or given that’s when the first progress payment kicks in I should say poor the slab) then a quick stop and entertainment from Bert while Rae ran in for coffee.

Now it’s time to get a few days washing done before the next lot of rain hits, maybe some work on My Top Secret Project (no telling Andrew, Rae, Daniel,  Ren, or Rob. Hmmm. Doesn’t sound so top secret when I list those names.) and if all goes to plan it will be the latest Dr Who this evening.

Reasons To Be Careful To Watch What You Say When You Have A Toddler #349.

When you are sitting on the couch with Nana and Uncle Rob after a lovely dinner and flicking through the channels on television your little will pipe up with “there’s just crap on the telly tonight mum”.

Oh my, he must have been listening to the neighbours most nights when they complain that “there’s nothing but crap on the telly again”. Yes, it must be the neighbours.

Last year we bought a patch of dirt.

Then we saw some plans.

Then we signed lots of bits of paper.

Then we waited.

Now the wait is over.

Tomorrow they begin to transform our little patch of dirt in to a house that will become our home.

Daniel has spotted a couple of inconsiderate idiots of late so I thought I’d join in.

Obviously because the drive of UZA 078 can afford an expensive car he or she doesn’t have to obey the parking rules. One question though – if they can afford this car why are they eating  lunch at McDonalds?
