The Street 2011

It’s street day. For the past three years I’ve taken a photo of our street on this day, so who am I to mess with tradition.

2011 – Not many visible changes this year, no new neighbours. Given how bare the street looks I really should switch to taking this photo in summer.

2010 – Every block built on, every house lived in and five changes of occupants in the past year including two new neighbours for us.

It’s getting to the stage where people have recovered from building and are now beginning to start working on the front of their houses. Still a long way to go but the street we hope to live in for a long time yet is slowly coming together.

2009 – Every house built and lived in and one remaining block is underway.

Sunday

Despite the fact we’re all wheezing, coughing, rasping, barking and generally unwell we bundled ourselves up and went for a drive to Hurstbridge this morning. We picked up Rae’s new bracelet and went for a stroll in the lovely early winter air.  It’s lovely in the hills this time of year, and well worth the trip.

Community

We’ve been here two and half years now and slowly it’s beginning to feel more and more like a community. In the past week I’ve met, befriended and then made a client of the local pizza shop owner, said hi to the kid’s hairdresser in Coles, had the postie wave to me when I drove past him around the corner and had our delivery guy drop off some treats he had too many of ‘cause he knew the kids would love them.

We know a couple of the neighbours, next door is six months pregnant, and it seems every kid in prep knows Bert. With such a new development and no old timers it’s going to take a little while for the roots to grow, but it really feels like we’re getting there.

Mothers Day

For Mothers Day I asked Rae what she wanted. Frilly knickers (no, more Fathers Day), a book, dinner out?

She said no to everything I suggested, her wish was for a new best drill press.

So that’s what she got; a spanky new Ryobi drill. Today it’s getting its first work out.

Retirement

Today we retired the oldest pc in the house. It is so old it actually has a floppy drive and the usb ports were added via a card. Over the years it had memory upgrades from 512MB to 2GB, I think it was on it’s third hard drive and had seen XP, Vista and Windows 7 but there comes a time in every PCs life where its time is up and after 10 years faithful service today was the day.

When I bought the machine it was around $1200 and was cutting edge, complete with a 15″ crt monitor. The replacement I picked up today cost me $284.50. Sure, it’s far from the edge but it is more than adequate for the kids and the power in comparison to the old one is staggering.

It is all set up now, ready to go. I’ve given Bert and Phee their own log-ins and put a link to Angry Birds on their desktops. I wonder if this one will last for 10 years? I assume by then the kids will all have a laptop or tablet and be laughing at just how primitive their old man’s old tech is.
