Now He Is Six (And I Am Confused)

I can’t believe how quickly time has zoomed by. Bert is now six. He had his first Macca’s party on the weekend, school friends and all.

I feel old, and not because Bert is six but because I was completely lost when I went to buy his present last week. He’s been after some Beyblade’s for a while now so I went to Target to pick one up. I found the shelf and stood there looking at the most bewildering array of completely indecipherable packaging. I was tempted to ask a mum wandering by if I could borrow her son for a while to explain what on earth everything was. In the end I think I figured out he’d need one of them and one of them would be good too. I can’t believe I’ve reached the age where kids toys confuse me. Shoot me now.

Here’s the birthday boy, on his big day, with his brother and sisters. Happy birthday Bert.

No Longer Me

I had to have a quick chat with Bert’s teacher this morning so we left the school a little after the bell rang. There were a couple of late comers hurrying up the path and as we were walking down the main steps a young boy started his way up. He looked up, smiled and said “Hello Albert’s Dad.” before running off to class. As far as I know I’ve never seen him before, even the twins (who seem to know everyone in Prep) didn’t know who he was. Made me smile.

The Odd Things You Notice

Just to prove how big a geek I can be…

This week as I was hanging out laundry I noticed that the planes seemed a lot closer to our place. Then I noticed the they seemed to be approaching from a slightly different direction at odd times. l wondered if there was a new flight path and went back to hanging out socks.

Well, this evening I was reading the local paper and found a little ad. Apparently there is a temporary change to flight path use at Melbourne airport while a couple of runways are undergoing construction work. There truly is no hope for me.

Socks

Somewhere in the world there is a person whose true passion in life is sorting socks in to matching pairs.

We could make them happy beyond their wildest dreams.

A laundry basket full of socks.

Pulp

The morning after and I’m still grinning from ear to ear. Last night I had one of my all time wishes fulfilled and saw Pulp perform live.

They were absolutely amazing, just under two hours of their greatest hits. Jarvis Cocker is a god (not just a good as previously reported in one of my tweets). The energy he committed to the show was incredible. The roof was raised for Common People and then somehow they found enough for an encore. I had waited so long to see them I ran the risk of being disappointed, but there was absolutely nothing about that show that was even mildly annoying. You could not have asked for anything more.

It was great to see it with Miss Marita and Daniel. The reason I wasn’t on Facebook all day yesterday ranting about how excited I was is that Daniel had kept my attendance a secret so it was real surprise to Marita when I walked up and sat down beside her. Seeing a performance like that is all the better when shared with friends.

At the close Jarvis said “see you again 13 years”.

I’ll be there.

The Dollar

I know it’s not good for some sectors of our economy but for someone like me who purchases a lot of services and software from the US I’m loving the dollar’s rise.

This morning I had to purchase a new piece of software. The online ordering page offered it to me for AUD$75. Hmmm, there’s an option to pay in USD, let’s see what the price is in that. USD$59.95, which in Aussie dollars turns out to be $55.32. One little switch on the form and I saved myself $20.
