More Good News for Sci Fi Fans (And A Sisterly Recollection)

I don’t even know how long this news has been around but I just discovered the aliens from V may be back.

I loved the original mini series, second one wasn’t so grand as the focus on ideas that made the first so compelling was replaced by an emphasis on action. I think I was about 13 or 14 when the mini series was screened here and the only reason I got to see it was because that night I was staying at my sisters. I begged and pleaded with mum and dad to watch the second instalment the next night and miraculously they let me.

In Shepparton the series (of which I still have the entire set on VHS) was broadcast by GMV 6 on a Friday night. Now this presented a problem because Mum liked to watch the football on Friday night, or maybe it was the gardening show on the ABC (this was almost twenty years ago so some memories are well and truly lost in the fog). Thankfully sister #2 came to the rescue and come 8.30 on Friday I’d put on my ever so cool blue detachable sleeves parka and walk down the block to watch it at Kate’s house. Being the true sci-fi geek I am was, I even took notes on characters as I’d been inspired by the just released Dr Who Programme Guides and thought I’d do the same for V.

I sometimes wonder how I turned out so normal.

My Graphic Past

Just when you think you’re safe…

I was going for a walk today at lunch, as I always do, and appreciating this fine Melbourne winter day when I saw a sign. Not a ‘light goes on over the head and tells me something sign’ or ‘the clouds part and god talks sign’ but an honest to goodness metal sign. And this sign had one of my creations on it.

A few years ago I was doing a web site for a clinical trial company. We were sitting around having a coffee talking about the site when Steve mentioned he didn’t have a logo but knew roughly what he wanted. I fired up Fireworks on my borrowed lap top and asked ‘sorta like this?’.

Well it wasn’t sorta like what he wanted – it was exactly what he wanted. And it’s terrible. Really really terrible. It’s sequel-to-Weekend-At-Bernie’s terrible. And now the worst company logo in recorded history is plastered on a sign at 151 Wattletree Rd for me, and the world, to see every day.

If I can summon up the courage I’ll bring my camera in tomorrow. Remember – you have been warned.

Goodbye Old Friend

It’s been with me for over 7 years, has seen many changes and lived in four different houses but now it’s time to say goodbye.

Tonight my longest standing email address – caffeine@ozemail.com.au – is finally put to rest when my dial up account expires. Good bye caffeine, it’s been fun but it’s time to put you to rest for good.

Ebaying Again

We’ve caught the Ebay bug again. This time it’s only a few DVD’s we want to get rid of ’cause they’ve released new editions and an ADSL line filter but as you can see less than a day in and everything has sold already. Hopefully we’ll get enough to pay for the special edition Sixth Sense (imdb | buy at amzaon) or Jerry (imdb | buy at amazon).

Half Way There

Half way through the footy season tonight and it’s the big game where Jason McCartney (see previous entry) makes his comeback and Brad Ottens returns to the Tiges after back surgery early in the year.

I hope Jason McCartney gets a standing ovation, has a wonderful first minute and is then retired to the bench ’cause the Tiges are playing all over him.

Go Tiges, and remember, NO PRISONERS!!!

Dang It

Arrrgghhhh.

I was working on a site for a local outpost of an international company (sounds a lot more impressive than it is) and today received a call.

“It’s good news and bad news Tony. We love the concept pages you’ve done, but Paris have just sent an email saying no one in the group is allowed to have individual web sites any more.”

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I still get paid but I really like what I’d done so far and was looking forward to refining and completing it. You can check out the prototype pages (index/contact/location and maps were all that got done) at www.anthonymalloy.com/mercure/.

So, any one in the market for a web site? I have this great idea on how it could look.

Why Us?

Jason McCartney is an inspiration. A professional footballer for the Kangaroos, he was badly burned in the Bali bombings of 2002. He vowed to play footy at the highest level again and after a painful recovery period it seems he is going to run out on the ground this weekend in his return to the AFL. Fittingly the ‘roos will no doubt rise to the occasion and win the game for him.

Good luck Jason, but why did you have to come back against the Tiges?

Football Highlight

A mega-day of football yesterday with an afternoon game at Telstra Dome and then a night game at the ‘G. Doggies and Tigers both playing on the same day, who could ask for more?

The highlight?

Dinner at Blue Train between the games.

Out teams suck.

Classic

Last night we trundled off to the Astor to see the magnificent restoration of Fritz Lang’s 1927 masterpiece Metropolis.

While the film was stunning, the restoration work of the highest order and the new Dolby Digital score most impressive the highlight of the night came from the early-20-something pretentious inner urban sophisticates directly behind us who talked all the way through the film. (As Rae said “for a silent movie, it sure had a lot of talking in it.”)

At the conclusion of the film one of the more enlightened members of the group couldn’t wait to share his depth of insight with his fellow critics.

“It’s a bit dated.”
