The Cost Of Having Children

Kids, they cost the earth. Another night in emergency last night, another large bill and he’s spent the whole day hiding behind the mirror in our bedroom, curled up on a towel refusing to come out.

Yes, Thomas got himself in to a fight so it was a quick trip off to Lort Smith Animal Hospital to have the abscess looked at and treated. Poor boy is feeling sick and sorry today and hasn’t even bothered complaining about not being let out. We’ll keep him in for a couple of days until he’s feeling better before he’s allowed out during the day again.

Bloody kids, who’d ‘ave ’em.

Sky Trail On A Grey Day

I have a huge window next to my desk and today, when ignoring grumbling and/or sulky kids, it’s fantastic for plane spotting.

We occasionally get a plane flying over but today there’s a steady stream of them. I wonder if it has anything to do with changed approaches because of the 100kph+ winds we are experiencing. In the past few minutes I’ve watched CX105, QF437 and what could be QF2054 fly past on their way to MEL (and there goes JQ437).

Bite

I know it’s spelt bite, my only excuse is that I’m so bloody tired, or is that tyred, or….

70 And 2 Days

I’ve been a bit busy the past couple of days so this is a bit late but happy 70th birthday mum.

We took the tribe up to Shepp for her birthday party on Sunday and had a great time. My sister Helen has just bought a new house and hosted the day. That girl sure knows how to host a party, well done Helly, it was a fantastic day with loads of family, I think mum will be smiling for days yet.

Of course there had to be a little drama. We spent an hour or so in the emergency department of the Goulburn Valley Base Hospital with Henry after he had a rather severe reaction to what we think was a bite bight. He’s perfectly fine now and we made it back for cake, which is the important thing.

The Family

I’d Forgotten

I’d forgotten, I really had, just how hard this looking after kids thing is. From a job where I sit in a chair and type/click all day and the most arduous exercise I undertake is walking down to the corner to grab my morning latte I’m now in constant motion picking up after and following the trail of devastation left by three kids under three.

I do remember how tough these first few days are but I’m looking forward to next week already. Phee will be back at school and I should be in something of a rhythm and hopefully have things under control. I’m also learning from last time with Bert and this time I’m not going to hide at home until the last few weeks. Weather permitting we will be out and about, reminds me I have to look up story time at the local library. It’s the one thing I regret about the time I spent with Bert – I was too scared for too long to go out in public. It’s funny, I’m probably going to stand out more this time but I’m determined not to be a stay-in-the-home stay-at-home dad.

Dad Day At Dougs

Bert - Before I took Bert for a haircut today, the poor boy was looking like nobody owned him (or those who did didn’t cut his hair). I first started visiting Doug The Barber almost six years ago and one of the best things about being a dad is being able to take my sons to a good old fashioned, if not slightly eccentric, barber.

This morning it was Dad Day at Doug’s, three of us with young boys, all about the same age in tow. I feel so sorry for the first dad in line – his poor boy (Will, as we all learnt) was obviously not happy to be there and shrieked at the top of his lungs for the entire cut. No matter what dad tried, even mentioning mum, could get young Will to calm down.

The dad after me came in with a young boy and girl; boy for haircut and girl most likely ’cause mum wanted the peace and quiet. The girl would have been a little older than Bert and sat there making googly eyes at him the whole time. Bert, being a typical male, was completely unaware that a pretty lady wanted to say hi and happily sat and listened to stories. Must have a word to him one day.

Our cut went well, Bert loves the chair and busied himself shooing imaginary flies from the cape around his neck. Mumma is happy, Dadda is proud and Bert looks like a real boy again.

A Quick Update On Day One

Yesterday was day one of me being an at home dad again. I did a quick head count before Rae got home and hadn’t lost any of them. I’m fairly sure they got every meal they were meant to and the two littlest got their naps, I even managed to get some washing folded.

Of course as soon as Rae got home I did what any sane man would do – hopped in the car and drove to a pub (okay, so it was for a meeting, but it was still a pub). I had forgotten just how demanding and exhausting those little people can be, give me a week or so and I may even be brave enough to attempt a car trip.

House Update

Woo hoo – the building permits were issued last week so Henley now have until the 20th of next month to start building our house!

Oh, and we got our first mortgage statement the other day. It’s only for the land so the amount isn’t that large but we’re already $16 worse off than when we started. Not bad going.
