The Name
As you can probably guess the name we have chosen is Albert and most people after giving that half smile that really means ‘have you both lost your marbles’ ask “why Albert?”.
It all started one day when we were talking about Todd Bertuzzi, the Canucks star right winger. John and Tom call him Bert, or Big Bert, and that’s what I’ve always referred to him as when talking to Rae.
Of course it didn’t take long for this to morph in to “Hey Bert”, the way Ernie says it on Sesame St. But after mucking around with really bad Ernie accents for a while it got me thinking that Bert is also short for Albert.
And Albert was my grandfathers name.
And that my Dad’s name is William, even though every one knows him as Ted.
And that my middle name is also William.
So if we add my grandfather’s name to my Dad’s name we get Albert William Malloy - and AWM are my initials too.
It all fits so nicely we’ve decided that’s the name we’re going with.
And god only knows what we will do if it’s a girl ’cause no way in hell could we call her Alberta and have her love us once she gets to school. Maybe we’ll call her Grover.

Or - if you want to stick with a Sesame Street theme…there’s always Zoe, Prairie Dawn, Gina, Maria, or…uh….Miss Piggy.

why cant you call her alberta? afterall… it’s a damn good name for one of our provinces over here… and tony - you loved alberta. you experienced new things there that have left somewhat of a lasting impression…. tasted snow, saw a frozen lake with people skating on it, and even made snow angels! i say, bring on alberta! may she not turn out like her province, flat with the nickname “cowtown”!
