Does my bum look big in this?
Have been thinking for a while that during my time at home, Bertie can be like his (as yet unborn) siblings and wear cloth nappies. Supposedly babies toilet train better from cloth, as they can tell when they are wet and ask to be changed or put on the potty sooner. OK, so that’s the theory anyway. I’m not planning on toilet training him just yet, that’s a summer job as far as I’m concerned! He can go around completely pantsless in summer. Way too cold for that now.
I’d been given a whole stack of towelling nappies. Last week I found some plastic pants. And finally yesterday I picked up a snappi nappy clip (I hate pins!) and some nappy liners. That was it. Time for the trial.
Changed Bert’s nappy in the arvo and kept getting funny looks. Looks that said:
What do you have there?
What the heck are you putting on me?
Is that plastic??
What in the world? Woman! What are you doing? Where is that comfy little nappy you used to put on me? WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!?!
He went back to disposable overnight. That was always my plan, as is him in disposable when we go out for a longer period and when he’s in creche. Then he went back into cloth this am, much to his chagrin. Again with those faces:
What do you have there?
What the heck are you putting on me?
Is that plastic??
What in the world? Woman! What are you doing? Where is that comfy little nappy you used to put on me? WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!?!
This last nappy change however, was asked for, and he wasn’t fussed with anything until the plastic pants went over the top of the lot. That got a bit of a face, but nowhere near the earlier lot. More a:
Yeah ok, I’m dealing with this with a straight face, but those pants are a little odd Mama.
Only thing I’ve noticed is his butt looks bigger. Very cute still, just more of it!

I used cloth with both my girls pretty much all the time unless we were going out. The bit about “training easier” in cloth isn’t really true, I don’t think. It’s more up to the individual child. My older girl Sarah trained like a breeze at 3.5 yrs old, and she was good for day and night, at once. Now, my 2nd Victoria has been a nightmare. All thanks to “Finding Nemo” she’s had a terrible fear of getting flushed away down the toliet. So, it’s taken a long long time to even convince her the potty is safe. But finally, after about 2 weeks of cleaning up puddles on the floor, and on th rug, she started saying Mummy let’s practice sitting on the potty, and bingo she goes. The biggest challenge was for me to not give in and go back to the easy route of stick a pull-up on the girl.
Good luck and hope Bertie is easier to train! :)
