Hello From Home

Hi from home. Yep, two weeks after returning to work I’m already spending a day at home (And, I have to say, loving it. I miss this a lot.).

It all started last Friday afternoon. I was leaving work early as it was but I had a call from Rae - Bert was ill and the crèche had called to come and collect him. I imagine it was something along the lines of “come and take your plague child”. I met Rae at the doctors where Bert got a ‘well, he seems okay, just give him rest and see’ assessment. We took him home, gave him rest and then we saw.

After a few hours Bert woke up and his afternoon spark had gone. I took him in to change his nappy when he started making choking sounds and the vomiting began. He calmed down after this but suddenly went a whiter shade of pale and, most scarily, his lips faded away and went blue for a second before coming back to the merest hint of pink. And he was hot, burning up in just a singlet and nappy.

RIGHT! Action stations. We headed straight for the doctor in Williamstown. As Bert was now resembling a rag doll this doctor had no problems in probing his throat and ears. It seems that a dose of baby Panadol in the afternoon had masked his symptoms. He had a temperature and his tonsils were incredibly inflamed and the virus had spread from there up to his ears. After the most thorough examination I had seen in years he was cleared to head home - sleep, sleep and more sleep was all we could do and keep an eye out for any bacterial infection which could opportunistically come in over the top of the virus. The doctor said to keep him home today at least, and to expect that he should be home on Tuesday as well.

I know it’s standard kids stuff but it was my first experience and listening to the poor boy struggling to take a breath as we drove to the doctors was not pleasant. He’s slept most of the weekend and we’ve kept the fever in check so he’s a lot better today. Hopefully he’ll get the all clear this afternoon when we visit the doctor and he can head back to child care with mum tomorrow and I can head back to work. Did I say hopefully? Hmmmm, I guess it’s hopefully for his sake.

Update

Just back from seeing the lovely Dr Sing. He’s done a great job in fighting off the virus. Tonsils still inflamed and one ear is red but a helping hand from some medication should see that on its way. Now it’s time for Ready Steady Cook (how quickly we fall back in to routine…)

Oh yucko! I hope the little man gets better soon. It’s amazing how quick these things come on with babies, I’ve been learning.
