Poo At Last
One of the most common questions (quickly followed by a laugh) I have asked of me is ‘how are you coping with the nappies?’. The answer? Quite well actually ’cause there really wasn’t much to cope with ’cause he wasn’t pooing.
Yep, 10 days without a poo. Lots of wee, lots of wind but the house remained baby-poo free. The Maternal Health Care Nurse wasn’t worried, apparently this is fairly normal, but after a week she said to have him checked by the doctor just in case. We took him to the doctor, who wasn’t worried at all and suggested that if nothing had appeared by the weekend to try a warm water enema.
Oh dear. I know I couldn’t do that to the boy so Rae bravely accepted she would have to perform the task and took the little syringe offered by the doc.
Thankfully it ended up not being required as over night the metaphoric damn broke and the you-know-what hit the nappy. It really is odd that my life has to come to celebrating the arrival of poo, but I couldn’t be happier that it has.

The same thing happened with Patrick. His dam broke during a settling class with other first-time Mum’s. Karen had to replace his entire outfit - one nappy was not enough for a breastfed baby boy with 10 days worth to remove!
On the topic of nappies, if you’re using disposable it’s well worthwhile checking out the MyPlanet (http://www.myplanet.com.au/) nappy recycling service. It’s a small cost (less than $10 per fortnight) for environmental piece of mind. We use it for Owen and feel much better that his nappies are being turned into some useful product rather than landfill. But you’re probably already onto it!
