Doctor appointment

Had an appt with the new doctor today. Dr Max is on hols this week and next, so I was to see his ‘locum’ Dr Scotty. Don’t start, all you Star Trek fans….

Anyway, get there on time and there are about 6 couples waiting outside. See Paula the receptionist and we’re told that there’s about a 30 min wait. We decide to go get lunch before the appointment, instead of after as we had planned and then come back.

Go eat lunch in the glorious sun outside (yes, I know it *is* supposed to be winter!) and relax, then wander back in. Now there are about 9 couples in the waiting area. Pop in to see Paula, and ask her to buzz Tony’s office when we’re ‘next’. He goes back to his office and I wander outside with Harry to have a sit down and a read.

Another half hour goes past and Tony calls me back inside. The appointment has been cancelled, due to Dr Scotty having to rush off to perform an emergency caesarean at another hosital nearby.

I could be grumpy about this, after all I’ve spent a good hour waiting, plus driven 30 mins either way to get there. But I’ve chosen to look at it from a different angle. If I were that woman with twins in distress and having to have an emergency caesarean, I’d be bloody happy that he turned up at my bedside too. And that’s what this private doctor thing is all about. You know that they’ll be there if or when you need them.

Remember back in January when I had that retroverted uterus problem? It was cos of Max that I was looked after so well. Tony made me call Dr Max to find out what the problem was. Max advised me to go and see my local GP to have UTI ruled out. I did, and thought nothing more of it. Around 3 hours later, while still in pain from an overfilled and unemptyable bladder, he calls me back and asks how things went and is chasing up everything for me. I tell him and he gives me further doctorly advice and follows up with a dose of go to hospital if it doesn’t fix within the hour. It doesn’t. We go off to hospital and while lying there waiting for treatment, he turns up, rubs my hand and tells me once they start treatment all will be fine.

No matter what, I’m very very glad that we’ve chosen to do this through one doctor and that our choice turned out to be as lovely as Dr Max. We’ve been calmed by his presence and he has an amazing ability to put us both at ease.

Regardless now of a wasted day or wasted travel or anything else, I’m glad we put ourselves in this man’s hands. Feels safe here.

BTW not a wasted day at all, as I got to have lunch in the sun with my beloved. And such a lovely time that was. We don’t get the chance to do that very often, so it was nice to be able to do it today.

I wish I could claim Dr Max for Renica. I think she’s at the stage where she needs a little reassurance. Argh. Bloody public system.
