Lyrics by Paul Kelly, as sung by Deborah Conway

“Why are you home so late?” he asked

“Everybody wants to touch me.” I answered

And it’s true. Everybody loves to feel a pregnant belly. Mine too. And they always ask before they poke “Is that ok?” hand trembling close to the skin. I always smile and say it’s fine. Then oh-so-gently, their flat hand feels my belly, rubbing it slowly.

All too soon, I’ll go back to being a normal person. One that people might touch my arm when they speak to me, or tap me on the shoulder as they say a fleeting Hi on their way past, but it will never be this intimate again.

It’s just an amazing time.

I get some who don’t ask before they touch and that always creeps me out!

Oh, I should mention it’s just friends so far. If it were complete strangers I’d probably be a little freaked!

Wait ’til you have to deal with people poking their heads into the baby’s pram and *gasp* touching the baby’s face without asking, especially during the first few months. It used to drive me insane!
