An Eye On The Market

One thing I’ve been pondering lately is where is Albert going to sleep?

Our home has only two bedrooms, and they are both rather full at the moment. There’s the sunroom out the back which wouldn’t be good so that leaves the study to convert, a far from ideal baby room. Even then we can’t repaint, knock down walls, hang pictures or put down carpet because the place is not really ours.

Renting is not a good position to be in when you want to expand a family but given the current state of the property market there is no way we could afford to live where we want to; that is, around where we are now. The only realistic option is for us to start out and then try to work our way back in over the years.

This means the time has come. We need to start looking at markets, investigating packages and following the property trends. We have only meagre savings but thankfully no debt of any great consequence so what we save does go to building the deposit.

We, and Albert, need a home of our own.

Yes, renting wouldn’t be a good position to be in when bringing home baby … not to mention that you’d lose out on all the fun of decorating Albert’s (or Kennedy’s) room.

If you are willing to go out a bit from where you are now, can I suggest you have a squizz at the new land allocations opening up in Altona Meadows? Not as far from civ as Caroline Springs et al, not as poncy as Point Cook, and because it’s not an estate, you can pick your builder and package freely (less costly in the end). Just a thought.

I don’t necessarily disagree with Kathy, but don’t overestimate the importance of owning a home to have a baby. Renting does not preclude having children, and with the dizzying state of real estate prices, don’t let it cause you to wait indefinitely while you try and buy something.

There’s some great houses out our way. You wouldn’t want stupid uppity Wyndham Green, but Werribee is still quite cheap. And you’re able to get the gov grants totalling $12k AND the $12k grant from the Urban Housing collective… contact them and see what they say? It certainly is a buyers market at the moment though, which is why SK and I are thinking about it too.
